the Pitigliano Film Festival
The Pitigliano Film Festival, conceived in 1997, is a brainchild of Michela
Scomazzon Galdi, journalist and scholar of cinema.
During her stays at Pitigliano, which she has been visiting for many years, she
got to know the resident Jewish community and discovered that the small Tuscan
town is known as "Little Jerusalem", and is a goal for visitors from the
international Jewish community also.
She realised that she was not the only person who had been unaware of this
forgotten fragment of history.
Her friendship with Elena Servi, president of the "Little Jerusalem" association,
opened doors to her and enabled her to see the extent to which this People, "which
dwells apart and cannot be counted among the people", has held on to its culture.
Given her prediliction for the cinema, the passage between this experience and
finding an expression for it was brief.
The collaboration and willingness of the authorities, of institutional and private
organizations, made it possible for her to stage the fìrst occasion of the Festival
in 1998, as a further contribution to the peaceful co-existence of peoples.
